Choosing the right restoration shop: a buyer’s checklist

By RestorationEssentials Editorial

Choosing a restoration shop is the single biggest decision you make as a buyer. The car itself is one half of the equation; the team that brings it back is the other. A first-class restoration takes years and tens of thousands of dollars, so the difference between a shop you trust and one you don’t is the difference between a car you enjoy for decades and a money pit you argue about for years.

Start with specialty. A shop that regularly restores your specific marque — and the body style within it — knows the quarter-panel stampings, the date-coded fasteners, the trim clips that you can’t see in a photograph but absolutely can when the doors come off. Ask how many of the marque they’ve completed in the last three years, and ask to see two of them in person. A shop that’s proud of its work will say "yes" before you finish the sentence.

Then forensically check references. Two written references, ideally from owners five or more years out, tell you how the car is aging — does the paint still fall right? Are the gaps still consistent? Are the mechanicals buttery or are you chasing small rattles? Call one of those references and ask what the shop did well and what they’d ask for differently. You’re not auditing for perfection; you’re looking for honest answers and durable work.

Finally, the milestone schedule. Any reputable shop will write down a phased plan with delivery dates and a payment schedule tied to milestones, not calendar dates. If the shop wants half the money up front and "we’ll see" on a delivery date, walk. Restoration is a long road, and you want a partner who treats your timeline and your budget with the same respect you’re bringing to the project.
